Local Grandfather Pens Magical Tales for Kids.
Local author and Grandfather Malcolm Abbott is evidence that the creative spirit of Northern Ireland continues to thrive. Inspired by the arrival of his three wonderful grandchildren, Malcolm has published a collection of magical tales in an exceptional gesture celebrating legacy, magic and a unique take on life.
Inspired by the arrival of his first grandchild Bobby in 2012 Malcolm from Whitehead in Co. Antrim published his first book The Adventures of a Jackabee. Rocky, the hero in the tale is a cheeky little dog, fiercely loyal and full of fun; a mix of pedigree Beagle and Pedigree Jack Russell who finds himself in all sorts of bother. Rocky a unique combination of both ease and charm are the magical ingredients in the stories that have already made him a favourite at bedtime.
Malcolm, a born storyteller, well known for his fabulous bedtime stories, enjoyed by his son James when he was a child was so delighted with the response to his first book and the numerous requests that flooded in to capture more of his wonderful treasure trove of tales also launched his next title The Magic Ice-Cream in 2013 as his second grandchild arrived, JulieAnn.
In the madcap world of The Magic Ice-Cream which features a colourful cast of characters, including Mr Hawkins, a secret ice-cream recipe is uncovered which changes life forever in the small village of Blossomhill. If the recipe is not made exactly to order as Granny has detailed, the ice-cream takes on magical powers and creates total havoc in the village.
Malcolm, in these stories, which are full length novels are to be enjoyed as much by parents and grandparents as children while reading aloud. He has created a unique style of writing to be enjoyed by children of all ages. Stories which were created for his own son’s bedtimes which have stood the test of time are to be treasured as are the unusual and contemporary elements embedded within Malcolm’s writing; his rich quality and careful weaving of the patterns in the tapestry of life are both enchanting and authentic.
As Rocky finds adventure and excitement, local children will delight in the familiar places and landmarks of Northern Ireland he travels and explores. Mr Pokey or ˜Mr Pokey Nose as he is known by the children in The Magic Ice-Cream will invite and encourage debate, laughter and fun by all the family.
Malcolm has written several other books, including the charming tale of Sammy, the Seasick Seal, no doubt inspired by his own environment and the beautiful landscapes of Co, Antrim. His latest novels for children are Rocky Returns, which is the sequel to the Adventures of a Jackabee. Also a book of 10 short stories written for his new grandchild Michael.
Shauna Dunlop, local author and owner of local children’s books publication company, Emain Publications stated as the eagerly anticipated Rocky Returns is due to be published on 19 April:
As more children and families read and learn together, the importance of celebrating family life and the local world we live in is growing. Malcolm’s collection of stories for all ages is a real gift for not just his own family but for families everywhere. The worlds Malcolm has created are scattered with magic, mystery and adventure and will no doubt inspire children to read and even draw as you will see in ˜Rocky Returns. Underpinning the books are clear themes of friendship, bravery, trust and ˜the magic of the everyday, something we sometimes miss and which these stories will hopefully help you remember.

My grandson Luis is your number one fan. You visited him at hazlette school. He won a prize for your book cover. He is so delighted. For his birthday I’d love to buy him a new set of your books. He’s read them so much they are all dog eared. Please could you let me know how I can get them and how much it will cost. Many thanks.
